I'm guessing you installed gd-1.8.x which no longer supports GIF images. I just ran through the same problem till I figured out that GD no longer makes a shared library, only static. So, you need to remove the (old) shared libraries from your system, otherwise PHP's configure script WILL use them, and when you get to actually use GD, it'll complain that it can't create GIF files (that error you got). Read up on GD's install and configure script, and when you run PHP's configure script, make absolutely sure that it figures out that it can NOT use the gdImageCreateFromGif() routine (it will say while it's configuring).
