$result = mysql_query($sql);
$ver = mysql_fetch_assoc($result);
if($ver[0] >= 4)
{
echo "You have MySQL 4.0 or greater";
}
else
{
echo "You DON'T have MySQL 4.0 or greater";
}
Not sure if that'll work or not, I haven't tested it. Hope it does though.
