You have:
$string = fread( $fileHandle, filesize( $fileHandle ) );
The example at php.net you looked at has:
$string = fread( $fileHandle, filesize( $fileName ) );
Just change your call to filesize() to use the file name as the argument.
No need to have a dirty solution, if you don't want to :)
