mail()-function/sendmail

I have big problems getting the mail()-function working -> the error I always get is as follows:
syserr(apache): can not chdir (/var/spool/mqueue/): Permission denied
Has anybody a clue what might be the reason for this error?
Should I change the rights of the mqueue directory? The mqueue directory has currently these rights: drwx------ -> root root --- .
The sendmail_path i use is as usual /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i).
