I may not have understood your first question after reading though it
again. (the whole $ at the end of the variable is what though me off
-- I think) :)
Anyway, what you can do is this:
$array = explode('-', $thedate);
$unixtimestamp = mktime(0,0,0,$array[1], $array[2], $array[0]);
date('any format you want', $unixtimestamp);
-------------------
Fill this in with the
format that you want. IE:
'm/d/Y'.
