how to get day of week?

Hi, I need to find out the day of the week for a given date in mysql DATE format. The calendar functions page in the manual (http://www.php.net/manual/ref.calendar.php) says: "The calendar functions are only available if you have compiled the calendar extension in dl/calendar. Read dl/README for instructions on using it." I noticed that dl/README is not in my source distribution (PHP4.0.1pl2), although it used to be in 4.0.0. Is it out of date now?
