Just to add to that... what it is doing is reading it as a 0.
0,0,0,09,30,1998 => 883458000
Tue, 30 Dec 1997 00:00:00 -0500
0,0,0,0,30,1998 => 883458000

Did you see this in the manual?
"The last day of any given month can be expressed as the 0 day of the next month, not the -1
day. "
I wonder if 0 has some significance in the month also?
