session expiration

Help please.
My sessions are not expiring until the browser is restarted. I have put
session.lifetime = 1200
in php.ini so that a session can only last 20 minutes, but this seems not to
be working. The sessions are dying only after the user closes the browser.
Is there something I am missing out in my configuration? I will really
appreciate any assistance.
