php installation

Hey All,
I'm pretty new to the list. My problem is that I have Php3
installed with Apache on my Linux machine. This was done during the Linux
6.2 installation. So I don't really have apache directories where I can
execute ./configure and the same goes for Php.
Now I want to upgrade to Php4, so I downloaded the latest Php4
, Php 4.0.1(zip & tar) from php.net , and Apache 1.3.12(with all
binaries)... I've gone thro' the documentation and accordingly installed
and configured both, ..the server starts et al, but when I try executing
any php4 file on the server, it gives an error saying "You do not have
permissions to access (file) on this server". I've given 777 perms to all
directories concerned!!!, but nothing seems to work.
Can anybody in this group help?
