try something like that:
<other-code ... i.e. connecting and so on>
mysql_query("INSERT INTO items SET
itemcolumn='".$item['itemID']."'");
or just
mysql_query("INSERT INTO items (itemcolumn)
VALUES('".$item['itemID']."')");
