PHP's date() function expects a Unix timestamp, which represents the number
of seconds since midnight on Jan 1, 1970.
For what you're trying to do, you'll likely need to either
(a) use substr() and mktime() to convert your YYYY-MM-DD HH:II:SS into a
proper Unix timestamp before feeding it into date(), or
(b) look into your database engine's capabilities and see whether it'll
format the date for you. If you're using MySQL, the function you'll want to
use in your query is date_format(), and it's documented at
http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/commented/manual.php?section=Date_a
