Ok there could be several problems....
first if your code is in a function and the variable being passed into the
script is a form variable then you must use the
global $frmVar;
to use that variable from the previous script... or use the GLOBALS array..
see the php documentation about that.
no outside variables are available from functions...
the second problem I see... but don't have time to elaborate on is this bit
of code

it LOOKS very suspicious... especially the value=\"$disciplineOption\"
I don't have time to really check it, but it doesn't look right at first
sight.
