Fast Templates error in PHP 4.3.1 ?

We upgraded the server to PHP 4.3.1 but now my Fast Templates include
file doesn't work.
Odd thing is that a test as follows doesn't generate a response as if
the file cannot be read.
ft.inc:
<?php
echo 'test';
class etc
?>
Anyone got any ideas?
