Register_globals not working

Hi there,
I have tried all I could, but "register_globals" doesn't work ...
The php.ini contains a line with
register_globals=on
The config file for the apache webserver has a line with
php_value register_globals on
Here is the little test file I use :
<?php
if ($mode == "simple") {
echo "REGISTER_GLOBALS is on";
} else {
phpinfo();
}
?>
If I display this file with "http://localhost/test.php", it shows me the result of phpinfo where it tells me, that register_globals is on.
If I display this file with "http://localhost/test.php?mode=simple", it show me the result of phpinfo()
What have I missed ?
