Admin Pass not working

On the php admin that is built into the site and normally has a pass=password and admin=admin default login and pass. Whenever I type the correct admin and pass, it just reloads the page and doesn't let me in but if I type in a different log & pass it displays Invalid username/password combination. I checked the database to verify I was using the correct pass and login. Does anybody have an idea of what I'm talking about and how to fix it?
