Go to the documentation, then go to chapter 4.6.
The question comes up on the mysql mailing lists from time to time, so
try searching those archives. MySQL AB's archives are linked from a page
you can get to easily from the MySQL documentation front page. You can
also use marc: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/
You'll probably also want to understand the the section on string
literals in chapter 6, as well.
