GD libraries

I am still having troubles with the GD libraries. I have downloaded and
installed the libpng packages using the mandrake control center. They
have installed the libpng.(a|so) files to a directory /usr/X11R6/lib/
When I try and compile php with the following:
./configure --with-apache=../httpd --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pg --with-gd
I get a message that it can't find the libpng.(a|so) so I add this to
the configure line:
--with-png-dir=/usr/X11R6/lib
But still I get the same error that it can't find the libpng.(a|so).
I know for a fact that the files are in that directory so any help would
be appreciated.
