There are several alternatives to the Unix timestamps.
There's an mCal library.
And there's some Julian date functionality somewhere.
And you could store your dates in various databases that have their own
restrictions/limitations and use PHP solely to print the pre-formatted
data returned from SQL.
There's probably at least one other option I'm forgetting.
