storing files in mysql and retrieving their properties

i'm a big fan of storing documents, images, etc. in mysql db's, but now i'm doing a project where i need to get the size (dimensions, not file size) of an image stored in the database. what's the easiest way to do this? is it possible to do it without writing it to a file first? thanks, -jake
