Newbie question: Sessions

I have a question regarding the concept of sessions. I understand that sessions can keep track of user-specific data, but I'm having a hard time understanding how they 'hold' the user specific data. My first thought is that the session variables hold the data. But how do you keep track of specific sessions and their variables then keep them tied to a user that is logged in? Any insights would be very helpful! Thanks, T
