Problem with socket_recvfrom ?

I'm created a UDP client, and I've having a problem with socket_recvfrom. I
do need to use this function, can't use socket_read, as it doesn't return
the UDP port the data came from.
The code below show's my problem

$recv_ret =3D socket_recvfrom($this->_socket, &$buf, 1024 ,0
,&$connectip,&$connectport);
echo "length:" . $recv_ret . "\n";
echo "data:";
var_dump($buf);
result------
length:516
data:string(0) ""
how can the length be 516 if it's returnning $buf as an empty string?
