Only relative URLs. And there's a lot of sense in that, as you do
(usually) not want to pass a session ID along to an external site ;-)
But if you really do need to pass the session ID along to an external
site, then you could use the session_name() and session_id() functions to
construct the absolute URL including session id manually.
Like this:
echo '<a
href="http://www.externalsite.com?'.session_name().'='.session_id().'">';
