Multitasking with PHP

I know this may sound crazy, but is there any way that PHP does run 2 or
more scripts at the same time?
What I would like to accomplish, that one PHP scripts starts either a couple
of other PHP scripts, or that the script calls a couple of functions running
in parallel.
