Sending variables in a link

I have a script that works but requires that a variable be passed, as
follows

HREF=http://www.dallypost.com/modules/fileupload.php?$path>
The problem I have is that I do not want the user to see variable
name or content.
Is there a way to send the variable and have it not appear in the url
line on the browser?
