Is php4 Array searching faster than MySQL?

Has anyone found out the speed difference between
making an ARRAY of a full MySQL table, then SEARCHING
(if(in_array(...))) or finding values by
($Array[table][value]) instead of doing MySQL queries
repeatedly?
Just a GENERAL idea. I know it depends on how big the
table, how much RAM, disk speed, processor speed.
But just in general, anyone?
I'm just at the start of a project, so the tables
aren't big enough for me to test it myself. But it's
for a high-traffic site so I'd like to plan ahead.
