Non-HTTP authentication

What is the common approach to implement user log in without using the HTTP authentication method? Since HTTP is stateless protocol, how can I make subsequent pages be aware of the user name entered on the first page? I probably can just record the IP and, say, the browser info in a database table, but then suppose there are two users accessing the same page from behind a firewall...
