I'd do pretty much what Dana describes except for the following:
1. store the user slected fields (checkboxes) in a session variable,
unregister the variable when you finished with the form.
2. use images for the next/previous form buttons (it looks better)
3. create a php page (let's call him Tim) which does all of the processing
each time the form is submitted and then redirects.
for example:
user performs search: you print out page 1 of results setting form action to
Tim.
user clicks the next form button: Tim takes a look at the form and performs
the following actions-
1. takes a look at the name of the submit button and sets the next page
accordenly (in this case to 2).
2. goes through all of the check boxes on the submitted page setting their
session array value to true or false. If you set each value on each
submitted page you take care of the user going back and deselecting check
boxes.
3. redirects to the next page.
user clicks finish: Tim unregisters the session value array but not before
passing the selected values to your DB page for processing.
