I've found Learning Perl has an excellent section on teaching regex to newbies. Programming Perl has a very extensive (but hard to comprehend even for experienced programmers) matching description. I definitely think preg() is better than ereg(), so you should buy (and maybe later return, all ethical questions aside) either of these books. Programing Perl has a complete and descriptive function reference and Perl and PHP share a lot of functions.
www.Bookpool.com has some very cheap technical books.

http://www.perl.com/pub/v/documentation/ would be a good place to begin reading up on perl regexps. The documentation there isn't great, but it suffices for most people. --Drew Vogel On Thu, 7 Sep 2000, Maxim Maletsky wrote: Hi, I am trying to create a class to filter the data in&out the database, it is not easy since I have too many specific needs, a simple nl2br() won't help me at all... Does anyone of you know a good tutorial on regex, like how to use it (not function or php specifically) , examples, ideas, manual, lists, codes... whatever.. Thank you, guys.
