multi-dimensional arrays in objects

This assignment does not work:
$this->vars[1][name] = "This is a test";
while this one does:
$tmp[1][name] = "This is a test";
$this->vars = $tmp;
any ideas on how to assign a value to a multi-dimensional array inside an
object using something similar to the first case?
