session variable

i have a problem with session variables...
i'd like to register a new session variable inside a class function... when i leave the
function i loose the session variable... how to solve this problem...
code:
class xyz {
function test () {
$content = "here i am";
session_register("content");
}
}
after executing the function i can not access the session variable $content;
