php,up2date and mcrypt

I have a new RedHat Linux v.9 server that gets its php through 'up2date'. I want the ability to use mcrypt with php. I thought that I read somewhere a way to do this without having to recompile PHP. Can anybody point me to the right place or explain to me how to do this?
