Gd anti aliasing

I am using gd 1.8.3. I find that most of the immages I generate with it
don't look very good. Does anyone know of a way to make them appear less
aliased? For example I am would like to use php to ato thumbnail images,
but the ones generated by imagecopyResized look like lego blocks.
Anyone have a suggestion?
