Escaping the " ' " character

I need to print the following:
onClick="MM_openBrWindow('http://www.gilardi.com/pdf/gwyt1poc.pdf','','')"
and I am not sure how to escape the " ' " characters.
Actually, the 'http://www.gilardi.com/pdf/gwyt1poc.pdf' will be a variable, $url.
Can someone point me toward some docs on this?
