mkdir permission denied

Hi all
Any ideas on why I can't get php to create a directory using mkdir?
According to get_current_user its running as me and I can create a
directory both using ftp and a shell.
But when I do a mkdir("absolutepathtodirectory", 0700);
It fails and a permission denied error shows up.
