Using FreeFont with PHP... installation problems

Greetings.
I've asked my ISP to install FreeFont for me, and they're
having a heck of a time getting it to work. Does anyone
have any ideas?
Here's what tech support there is telling me:

The FreeFont was just impossible to install. I had to remove it
completely because Apache and gd would not compile (separately or
together) without errors if FF was anywhere detectable. Something is
not compatible. Here are the versions:
Apache 1.3.12
PHP 4.0.2
GD 1.8.3
FreeType 2beta8
I tried the last 3 with older versions in different combinations, but
at one point, the entire httpd became crippled for a few hours.

I would REALLY appreciate any help you can give me, either from
your own experiences or by telling me where I might look for an
answer.
