Matchmaking System

A most amusing project has just come my way. I have a client who wishes to start an online matchmaking/dating service, one not unlike Match.com or Yahoo! Personals. There is a rather unique twist to this service, one that I cannot publicly discuss, but in general terms it is no different than any other such offering. Is anyone aware of any pre-existing framework(s) for a matchmaking application? Perhaps someone knows of an article/tutorial regarding the design of such an app. I've no problem doing this from scratch, in fact the idea rather intrigues me, but I'm not one to re-invent the wheel if I can avoid it.
