mail function fails

I have submitted this as a bug but thought I'd ask anyway.
Does anyone on this list have any advice as to why a simple mail script
that just calls the mail function would result in the output:
Unknown error in <b>E:\new_email.php</b> on line <b>3</b><br>
This is on a Windows 2000 server.
The same script works fine on NT, 98 etc
