Validate? How about something like:
eregi('^(f|ht)tp://([a-z0-9._:-]+@)?([a-z0-9][a-z0-9-]+\.)+[a-z][a-z]+(/([a-z0-9.%&=-]+)?)?',$string);
You can adjust the "get" part to suit...
