Document Sharing

Hi all, I'm actually a new PHP user. Currently I'm doing a project which is to let someone share documents with other people in an organized way. The shared documents are placed in a server. Through that web site, a person can open, upload, download, create new folder, rename the document and also delete the document. But I do not really have an idea on how the background coding which can do all these. I am able to open the documents once the user clicks on a document but don't really know how to go on as I'm not sure how PHP can do all these. Can anyone please help me or at least guide me on what and how to do it?
