PHP has no limitations like this that I have heard of or encountered. If it's a mysql database, check to see what type of field it is: TINYTEXT, TEXT, MEDIUMTEXT, or LONGTEXT; or perhaps TINYBLOB, BLOB, MEDIUMBLOB, or LONGBLOB.
