Tomcat is actually really good. When first you have it running, you need to
do bad things to make it stop functioning. Else I would recommand Enhydra
(www.enhydra.org). It's an application server build upon Tomcat, and have a
lot of features smart features which tomcat doesn't have. Furthermore
Enhydra is open-source and has a large community behind it. It also have
good documentation (which Tomcat lacks), and is easy to use.
As for what regards your problem I don't have a clue :(
