sending 2000 emails script

I'm writing a script that sends up to 2000 emails. They seem to take 0.4 seconds each, so the script takes about 15 minutes to execute. Is there any way of making that faster? Is .4 seconds normal to send a (rather short, no attachments) email? I can't use a mailing list for various reasons, is there a better way of doing this?
