well, there's no difference at all.
you can have a foot.php, foot.inc, foot.txt, foot.maxim_maletsky, justfoot
...
nothing will happen, the parser seeing a file included just switches to it
and continues to parse it until it ends, then it comes back to the original
file where it goes wild till the EOF.
just a connection to another file, whatever the extension is.
It is always a time for parser to switch, so more includes - slower the
software gets..
nothing specific that I know about the extension.

What (if any) is the downside of including or requiring a file with a .php
extension (ie a footer) from a file with a .php extension?
For example, I have a self-contained "footer.php" that I call from both
legacy .html files and new .php pages, which obviously makes life simpler.
Can anyone see a problem with this? "footer.php" does not use any variables
our reference anything outside itself.
