Session time-out value

Hello All, I am using php and Mysql in my application. The problem is that the system automatically logs the user out of the system after 24 minutes. I would like to extend the session lifetime to about 2-3 hrs. I know there is a way to do it using a .htaccess file kept in the same folder as the application. Does anyone know how this is done ??
