prob with pdf_show_boxed

Hi, here my problem: $toomuch=PDF_show_boxed($pdf,$temptext,70,80,200,$anfangseite-$pos-65,justify); $toomuch returns the number of char not able to be displayed in the box. I am only interested in the value of $toomuch at this point (If $toomuch>0 -> make the box larger until $toomuch=0, you get the idea). Unfortunately the pdf_show_boxed funtion under php4 seems to display the content of $tempstring at once :-( In the C-interface of pdflib there is an 8th parameter to the show_boxed function with which I can tell pdflib not to display the content of $temptext. It seems not to be implemented in php4. Any ideas, workarounds, fixes or am I simply wrong with my understanding of the show_boxed function?
