Hi,
OK, this could be one of several things or a combination of them.
Sounds like you have either:
a) given the mysql root account (which is not the same as the system root
account) a password and are not suppliying it on the command line. No matter
if its the same as the system root account (which I wouldn't do), you still need to
supply the password to get in if it has been set.
b) you have not allowed root to log into "localhost" in the mysql.user table.
Perhaps you set it to the hostname instead of localhost.
c) did you run the mysql_install_db script when to set up the initial grant tables
when you set up the server?
This is all I can think of at the moment. Meanwhile, you _can_ reset the
privileges via another route:
Reload the mysql daemon with the --skip-grant-tables option which load mysql
with the permissions wide open (do *not* leave it like this in production) and then
update the grant tables to set a password/host that root can log in from.
I strongly suggest that you don't take my word for it but read the documentation
on this problem at:
http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/commented/manual.php?section=Ac
cess_denied
Hope this helps,
Jamie
