XML data to associative array

Hi, I have the descriptions of some data in XML format, and I would like to integrate these descriptions into a site built in PHP, using the XML parser based on expat. The simplest option I can think of is to re-map my XML data to an associative array, after which I can apply my "style transformation" via PHP. From the examples provided in the reference manual and from searches in the archives I have not found reference to similar approaches, so I would like to understand whether this solution makes sense.
