We're having some issues with Apache children closing down.
Apparently, when they close down (closed by the parent process)
the persistent connections opened by PHP aren't closed. Obviously
they're closed on the Apache side to the extent that they can't
be used - but the connection is still held open on the database.
Then when another process starts up and creates a new persistent
connection, yet another connection is used on the database.
This might be more of an apache issue, but maybe not. Is there
a way that PHP could get a signal from Apache when the process
is closing to in turn close any persistent connections that are
open?
