Thanks guys, I've got it working now. I'm using a process running in a hidden frame which is simply making javascript calls to update the status bar of the browser window. I might try to make a cool little status bar function out of it later, but at least the user has a way to see what's going on now. Using flush was the missing element. I should have linked it in my head with ASP's response.buffer and response.flush, but it didn't click until you guys mentioned it.
