General Function usage question (simple)

Hi List,
Here is an easy one for you :-)
--- Example1 Function ---
Function MyTestFunction(){
// do something here
}
--- Example2 Function ---
Function MyTestFunction($var1,$var2){
// do something here
}
My question is what do or where do or why are the $var1 and or $var2
included inside the brackets of a function.
What do they do ?
Why are they in there ?
And how are they used within an application ?
I am very sorry for the basic question but I am new to the world of
functions.
Thank you in advance for any explanations, help or explanatory urls that you
may impart.
